Asphalt Patching: What It Is, How It Works, and is It Right for You?

Asphalt paving is economical, durable, and a great choice for driveways and parking lots. Due to Calgary's harsh winters, however, asphalt can also develop cracking and potholes. Thankfully, instead of having the surface entirely repaved each season, you can call the asphalt paving experts at All-Star Paving Ltd. for high-quality asphalt patching.

Asphalt patching is a cost-effective way to extend the life of your residential or commercial asphalt surface. There are a few different methods that paving professionals in Calgary use to repair asphalt.

Asphalt Patching Methods

  1. Base repair patching - In base repair patching, the defective asphalt layers are removed down to a stable base using a pavement saw. The base is levelled and compacted to provide a solid base for the new asphalt, and a tack coat is applied to bond the new and old asphalt surfaces.

  2. Overlay patching - Overlay patching is used to repair larger areas of asphalt surface wear and failures such as cracking, pitting, ravelling, and ruts. An overlay patch of hot-mix asphalt is applied to the entire area. It sets quickly and can greatly extend the life of an asphalt surface.

  3. Spreader box patching - For smaller jobs, it may be convenient and economical to apply hot-mix asphalt to the areas that require patching using a spreading box. The box is attached to a towing vehicle, which moves ahead as the mix is applied. The resulting surface is very smooth and of uniform thickness.

  4. Grader patching - Grader patching using a roller can also be an efficient asphalt patching method. Graders are used to spread hot-mix asphalt for levelling and smoothing out a certain area. A dump person is typically utilized to help make sure that the asphalt is properly spread.

  5. Compaction - Following any type of asphalt patching, whether the patch is small or large, the new layer of asphalt must be properly compacted using a roller. This allows it to stand up to foot and vehicle traffic for a long time to come. Rolling begins as soon as the asphalt is laid.

When to Choose Resurfacing or Repaving Instead

If your asphalt surface has several cracks and potholes, then asphalt paving services such as resurfacing or repaving might be a better choice. During resurfacing, the top asphalt layers are removed so that patching can be done on the base layers before the new top layer is poured. If the damage is found to extend down to the foundation of the asphalt, however, then it will need to be completely repaved.
